The CDC reports that getting the flu vaccine is the best thing that a person can do to prevent the flu. This should be done yearly since the viruses causing the illness change and it is best done from October to November, though it can even be done during the flu season.

Moderate exercise is another simple thing that a person can do to reduce their risk of catching a cold by one third. This exercise can be as simple as walking briskly for 45 minutes five days a week.

Washing hands is another great way of preventing colds and the flu. This should be done with soap and it should involve rubbing the hands together for at least 20 seconds to eliminate germs. The spaces between the fingers, under the nails and the wrists should also be cleaned.

Thorough washing of hands should also be done after using public facilities like trains. This is due to the fact that cold and flu viruses can be spread by touching objects like doorknobs and railings that were used by persons who sneezed into their hands but did not wash them.

Keeping the home clean is another way of preventing colds. This should be done by cleaning bathrooms and kitchens with disinfectants. Sponges should also be cleaned with bleach or changed weekly.

Cleanliness should also be extended to the office by polishing workstations with antibacterial wipes. Windows should also be opened for ventilation and coughing or sneezing workmates avoided.

Eating fruits and vegetables like mangoes and sweet potatoes can also help prevent colds. These brightly colored foods are rich in antioxidants and strengthen the immune system to help keep colds at bay.
