How To Get Kids To Brush

maleah,amaya,kimberly,calvin,mcleod_044We all know how critical it is to teach our children good oral hygiene, starting at a young age. It’s so important for our kids to brush.  So what happens when they just don’t want to do it?  Here are some helpful tips for parents to encourage kids to brush.  Who knows? With these fun tricks, maybe they’ll even be the ones to remind you that it’s time to brush!

Make Bubbles

Encourage your kids to make as many bubbles as they can while brushing.  Hold a contest between siblings to see who can make the most bubbles.

Brush With a Friend

Allow them to bring a special doll or stuffed animal in to brush with them. They can brush their friend’s teeth first and then their friend can watch as they brush their own.

Let Your Kids Choose Their Toothpaste/Toothbrush

Take them to the store and let them pick. With all the different character toothpastes and toothbrushes they have now, your child is sure to find a favorite among them.  They’ll look forward to brushing and using these special items.

Sing a Favorite Song

Encourage them to brush for two minutes by choosing a song to sing.  When the song ends, so does the brushing.  For shorter songs, have them sing it twice.  Some examples include “Happy Birthday” or “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”

Use a Timer

Two minutes is the goal when brushing.  So set a timer and make it fun.  Ready, set, brush!!

Give Them a Reason

Explain why we need to brush. Tell them how sugar bugs can make holes in our teeth if we don’t brush and take care of our teeth. Sometimes they just need a reason to get them motivated.

Lead By Example

Make sure your kids see you brush as well.  You can even make it a special time together each morning and night, one that you and your child will both look forward to.

If you still find yourself fighting a battle to get your kids to brush, don’t hesitate to ask for help.  Sometimes hearing it from a dentist works better than hearing it from mom or dad.  Do whatever it takes to start your child on the road to good oral health.
