Valentine’s Day Fun – Minus The Sweets

Valentine’s Day is a traditional day of celebrating love, showing our love to others. We shower our mates and family with gifts. Beautiful roses, feel-good massages, and calorie-laden, sugar-filled candies and treats.

What’s wrong with that picture? When it comes to our children it’s not so wise to give them non-nutrient candies. We don’t want to have to pay for dental fillings a few months later, so why indulge them in sweets on Valentine’s Day? We know it’s not the healthiest thing to do.

So here are some ways for parents to celebrate “Love Day” with the kids. You’ll feel good about taking the focus off eating sugar and making it more about spending fun times together.

Tell Jokes

For Love Day fun, tell jokes. Laughing together, whether at the breakfast table before school or at the dinner table in the evening, makes for a happier day. Just think of it as avoiding the “sugar slump” that happens after eating a lot of candy. For a few funnies, visit http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/valentines-day-jokes.

Compliment Each Other

Give each other compliments. Show your love by using first and last name initials to say something encouraging to each other. “I love you, because you are/have/do….,” using the initials to prompt a compliment.

Hidden Hearts

Have a scavenger hunt with pieces of hearts stashed around the house. Have inexpensive prizes on hand.

Make a Poem

“Roses are red, violets are blue…” is the oldest love poem. Make poems with these lines to help you get started. Then complete as your heart leads you.

We’ve been taught that giving sweet treats shows love. Actually showing love is about spending time together and making your love known. No calories and no regrets. Just add lots of hugs and kisses too!
