National Preparedness Month

vaccines-immunizations- Catch UpThe American Academy of Pediatrics states that it’s National Preparedness Month. They want families to “Be Disaster Aware, Take Action to Prepare.”  As a family, it’s important to have a plan in place. Our guest blogger provides some tips for preparing your family:

September is National Preparedness Month, therefore take action to prepare by following these tips:

Create a Kit

Create a disaster supply kit that includes food items like 10 cans per person of ready to eat meat, fruits, vegetables, milk and soup, bread in a waterproof container and 3 gallons of water per person.

This disaster supplies kit should also include a first aid kit with pain relievers like acetaminophen, antibiotic creams and antacids. Personal identification, cash and credit cards, battery powered radio and flashlights, batteries, matches in a waterproof container, can openers, a Swiss Army knife, sleeping bags, a change of clothing and bar soap are other non-food items to include in the disaster supply kit.

Develop a Plan

Develop a family emergency disaster plan which should include the names, birth dates, social security numbers and any important medical information about all family members. This plan should also have the names and telephone numbers of your doctor, pharmacist, an out of town contact, neighborhood meeting place and evacuation location.

Get Involved

Get involved in preparedness activities in your community by meeting with others to decide what needs to be done before a disaster and working with the local emergency response team for training.

Get a Flu Shot

Enhance influenza prevention and control by getting your annual flu shot and encouraging others to do so yearly, especially if they have long-term chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, immunosuppression and neurological disorders. Plans should also be in place to treat those who develop influenza like illnesses.
